Key duplication looks instant, but a good copy follows a precise sequence. Understanding it explains why a quality shop asks the questions it does.
1. Identify the keyway
First we match the blank to your lock’s keyway (KW1, SC1, a mailbox or cabinet profile, and so on). The blank must physically fit before anything is cut.
2. Trace or code the cuts
With the right blank, the machine either traces your original or cuts by code. Tracing copies the existing bitting; code cutting reproduces the factory pattern precisely — useful when the original is worn.
3. Deburr and test
Fresh cuts leave tiny metal burrs. A deburring brush smooths the edges so the key slides cleanly and does not scratch the cylinder. A good shop then tests the copy before you leave.
Why worn keys make bad copies
Copying a copy of a copy accumulates error. If your key is worn, cutting a fresh one by code — or from the best available original — gives a far more reliable result.
